Whatever Gets You Through the Hours

I think about this girl I knew in a city by the ocean
with eyes a'fire and on her hand a diamond ring
While I wonder 'bout the old nights when she always bore my hope
I whisper, "Listen baby, you should'a married me"

I think about you now and then
I think about the life we should've shared but never spent
in the confines of your heart who hides there now?
does he get you through the dark?
does he get you through the hours?

I walk along the shoreline where the gravel meets the bay you haunt
and think about the promises we've broken
I always swore that id be one to make you proud some day
but now I've lost track of the years since we've last spoken

I think about you now and then
I think about the life we should've shared but never spent
in the confines of your heart who hides there now?
does he get you through the dark?
does he get you through the hours?
does he get you through the dark
through the long and lonely hours?

I focus but a moment on what has passed before my eyes
for a fool is one to hold to what's un-changing
But I never cease to wonder if a better man was I
could I have found the words to win your heart?
